Stage

Stage 1

Clermont-Ferrand > Clermont-Ferrand

The first part of the stage, which is quite flat, will lead to the Château d’Effiat, before a return to Clermont-Ferrand where the finish suits puncheuses. In order to win the stage and claim the Yellow Jersey, the riders will have to deal with the Côte de Durtol (1.7km at 7.2%) and then the treacherous balcony route that passes through Chamalières to reach a 450m-long finishing straight.

Stage 2

Clermont-Ferrand > Mauriac

There’s no respite on a route where the favourites for the overall classification could already battling it out between themselves: there’s the panoramic road past the Sanadoire and Tuilière rock outcrops that heads into Mont-Dore, then the final circuit around Mauriac that features six categorised climbs, the last of which (3.4km at 5.8%) comes just before the gentle 500m climb towards the finish line.

Stage 3

Collonges-la-Rouge > Montignac-Lascaux

Sprinters take note: this stage is a but hilly but quite rolling. It will allow viewers to appreciate the châteaux of Pompadour and Hautefort, and SaintRobert, one of France’s most beautiful villages, as well as the stunning Vézère valley. If it’s a bunch finish, the fastest riders will have a 650m straight on which to show their paces, just a stone’s throw from the famous prehistoric site.

Stage 4

Cahors > Rodez

Starting with a loop to greet the Danish royal family, owners of the Château de Cayx, this long stage should provide a pleasant opening section in the magnificent Lot valley. Things will get more complicated with 40km to go when there are four successive tough climbs, including the Côte Saint-Pierre, that will make for a very demanding finish.

Stage 5

Onet-le-Château > Albi

The outcome is hard to predict on this stage that should suit a long breakaway. The climbs around Najac and Laguépie will offer a springboard for the most daring. But the sprinters who can deal with the hills, the last of them arriving with 23km to go, will be hoping that a reduced peloton will regroup coming into Albi, where the finish will be located at the foot of the episcopal precincts.

Stage 6

Albi > Blagnac

The sprinters will have the ideal opportunity to duel with each other on the 1,100m finish straight that awaits them in Blagnac. That’s assuming that they don’t lose too much of their vim climbing to the hilltop villages of Cordes-sur-Ciel and Puycelsi, the latter particularly tough. What’s more, they must avoid being ambushed by the wind on the endless straight out of Grenade, shortly after the 100km mark.

Stage 7

Lannemezan > Col du Tourmalet

A small loop around Lannemezan and then off! The riders will then have to tackle the two most frequently climbed passes in the history of the Tour de France, the Aspin and Tourmalet, the “roof” of the race, which will be tackled via Sainte-Marie-de-Campan and La Mongie. The day’s victor will probably be well placed to win the overall classification.

Stage 8

Pau > Pau

Between Pau and Gan, this stage will initially follow the route of the final part of the 2019 Tour de France time trial, but running in the opposite direction. After topping the climb (1.8km at 5.5%), the winding course will demand multiple accelerations. The slightly uphill approach to the finish will offer a magnificent panorama, and perhaps some final suspense before the presentation of the Yellow Jersey.
