Overview

When the US Postal team moved from Nice to Girona back in 2000, few could have predicted that Girona would go on to become the European mecca of road cycling. However, the rolling landscapes around Girona are also home to some of the best gravel rides in Europe.

Combining the road rides made famous by so many professional riders and the gravel routes that are now emerging, this stunning part of Spain (or Catalonia) is the perfect destination for a road and gravel trip. Supported by the cycle tour experts Thomson Bike Tours, you will experience stunningly beautiful rides, great climbs, wonderful hotels, and some of the best food and wine in Europe.

This trip has been specially designed with Signature Cycles in mind, offering you the greatest rides on road and gravel and memorable luxury hotels. This is the perfect entry level trip to enjoy everything that the road and gravel surfaces have to offer! We start with five days of road riding, before transitioning to gravel. Our professional mechanics will be on hand to help you with any necessary equipment transitions. We recommend an all-road or gravel bike, speak to Signature Cycles who are waiting to help you with these decisions.

Your journey starts in Girona with a warm-up ride on the famous Els Angels climb. The trip continues with rides to the beautiful Mediterranean coast before heading into the rolling hills of the Pre-Pyrenees, eventually returning to Girona on gravel trails.

Join Signature Cycles in Girona for an unforgettable experience and some of the best bike riding Europe has to offer!

Gravel Explained

Read below for a brief description of our gravel definitions. We have classed the surfaces into five categories, from tarmac to boulders, to give an indication of the amount and level of rough stuff on each trip.

Click below to see Cycling Tips’ great explainer video on gravel surfaces.
GRADE 1
Bad roads, cobbles and rough paved surfaces. You’d find this rideable on a standard road bike.
GRADE 2
Well-made, hard-packed dirt roads offering a road-like experience but without the traffic. Some rutting and looseness of stones.
GRADE 3
Reasonably smooth gravel. Discernible small rocks over a hard-packed surface.
GRADE 4
Rough gravel with conditions that may include shale, larger gravel and rocks. Tubeless tyres and big clearance are the most practical choice.
GRADE 5
Borderline MTB terrain, at the rougher end of the spectrum for the capabilities of most gravel bikes.

Welcome to Girona

Your trip starts at Barcelona Airport where our staff will meet you before the transfer to your hotel in Girona.

After lunch, orientation meeting and bike build-up, you’ll head out for your first ride to one of Girona’s real icons…the Els Angels climb. Smooth turns and a true gentle elevation gain are the ingredients of this classic climb finishing at the Els Angels Sanctuary.

Day 2

The adorable B-sides

If Els Angels is a true classic…each big hit needs an adorable match…and so are the following climbs and their descents…Santa Pellaia, Coll de la Ganga and Romanyà de La Selva…all of them long time favourites of the local riders. Ask the locals and hundreds will point at Santa Pellaia as one of the prettiest winding roads a cyclists can ride on, promised. We personally can’t wait to ride it once more!!!

Day 3

The jaw dropping Costa Brava road

And talking about winding roads…Day 3 may have one of the best known European winding roads… its section from St. Feliu de Guixols to Tossa de Mar must be the most famous road in Girona…incredible flowy turns with jawdropping views to the Mediterranean are the reason behind its fame. Hold on to your bars because it’s easy to get distracted with so much beauty.
