Overview

Patagonia is the southernmost region of South America; it is vast, secluded, and untamed. A land shaped by volcanoes, mountains, and crystalline-blue lakes surrounded by native forests.

Are you ready for the austral adventure of your lifetime in Chile and Argentina?

Same as we did with our friends form Xaluca on the Morocco gravel trip, or with Kayuh in the Bali new trip we launched this 2023, for this Patagonian adventure we partnered with the team at Terradosa (based in Colombia and Chile, and long time dealers of premium gravel brands like OPEN, Apidura, etc, and also part of the organization of the famous “TransCordilleras” unsupported gravel race). They live and breath gravel and Arturo has been living in Chile for more than 20 years. Local knowledge is key in this region.

During seven days you will travel around 478 km and climb 8,893 m, crossing twice the natural and political border between Chile and Argentina. Starting from Pucón at the feet of Volcán Villarica, through extraordinary forests and lakes to San Martin de los Andes and villa Traful, both iconic Argentinean towns. Near the end we submerge into Argentinean culture to finalize in one of the most amazing and magical places in Chile: Huilo-Huilo biological reserve. You will experience an unforgettable adventure across the Cordillera de los Andes between two different countries and their cultures.

We love PATAGONIA, and we can’t wait to show you why!

Bike Setup Recommendations

Recommended Tires

700×42

A minimum 700×42, but feel free to use more rubber for more comfort and grip if your bike has extra tire clearance.

Recommended Gearing

38T × 11-42

We recommend a minimum gear ratio of 0.85-0.90 using a 38T chainring × 42 rear cog (or equivalent if you are using double chainring). Check your gear ratios at www.bikecalc.com/gear_ratios.

Gravel Explained

Read below for a brief description of our gravel definitions. We have classed the surfaces into five categories, from tarmac to boulders, to give an indication of the amount and level of rough stuff on each trip.

Click below to see Cycling Tips’ great explainer video on gravel surfaces.
GRADE 1
Bad roads, cobbles and rough paved surfaces. You’d find this rideable on a standard road bike.
GRADE 2
Well-made, hard-packed dirt roads offering a road-like experience but without the traffic. Some rutting and looseness of stones.
GRADE 3
Reasonably smooth gravel. Discernible small rocks over a hard-packed surface.
GRADE 4
Rough gravel with conditions that may include shale, larger gravel and rocks. Tubeless tyres and big clearance are the most practical choice.
GRADE 5
Borderline MTB terrain, at the rougher end of the spectrum for the capabilities of most gravel bikes.

Lago Lácar, Argentina

Our first border crossing into Argentina. Deep in the Andes, we navigate the Pirihueico lake to reach a beautiful gravel road alongside lake Lácar that ends at a unique place in the Chapelco Valley: San Martín de los Andes.

After yesterday’s big stage, today’s a bit more relaxed, doing our first section of the stage on the ferry.
