This winter....go PRO!

In 2014, we introduced winter training in the hottest new cycling destination: the island of Gran Canaria. It was a raging success. As advertised, guests enjoyed perfect temperatures, epic climbs and superior accommodations. The camps were so popular we've now extended our offerings to 4 weeks in 2016. Move fast - these will fill up!!

Discover the climber's paradise that has become a pro peloton mainstay in the off-season. Team Tinkoff are island regulars, Fabian Cancellara bought property and Ryder Hesjedal couldn't contain his excitement about the climbs on Twitter

New in 2016 - EL TEIDE on TENERIFE

The ultimate winter training camp just got better.
We are raising the bar and including a monumental day on the neighboring Canary Island of Tenerife, to tackle the infamous
'El Teide' climb.

The longest continuous climb in Europe at 50 km long, El Teide rises from sea level to almost 2500m. It has become a mecca for top Tour de France contenders because of it's extreme altitude, perfect climate and steady slopes.

We couldn't resist a climb that Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome
credit their Tour de France wins to.

We're going to fly you over to Tenerife from Gran Canaria for the day (30 min flight), where our staff will meet you with the bikes, ready to support you on the ride up Spain's highest mountain.

Don't miss this exceptional opportunity to truly train like the pros!

Why do the pros flock to the Canary Islands?

The Canaries have all the elements for the ultimate winter training experience:

1. Weather
It simply doesn’t get any better. Enjoy 20 to 23ºC (70 to 75ºF) temperatures in the heart of winter with perpetual sunshine and virtually no rain.

2. Superior Training Terrain
Gran Canaria reaches 2,000m (6,000ft) in altitude. There are over 25 distinct routes with climbs that rival the toughest of the Alps. It's Thomson Terrain! Peter puts the island's infamous Valley of the Tears and the climb to Pico de Las Nieves right up there with the Stelvio and the Mortirolo!

3. Bike Friendly Roads
There is low to almost non-existent traffic on endless, smooth mountain roads. The island has embraced its' growing two-wheeled culture, offering ample bike resources and a positive attitude towards cyclists.

4. Optimal Rest and Recovery
We'll stay at the 4-star Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa resort - rated Number 2 out of over 700 hotels on the island of Gran Canaria!
A full spa, sprawling pools, and outstanding cuisine will have you recharged and ready for more.

5. Easy Access
Gran Canaria is just a short flight from Barcelona or Madrid with several regular flights every day. Once on the island of Gran Canaria, our hotel is just 40 minutes from Gran Canaria Airport.

See for yourself! View our album of photos from our previous camps.

Gran Canaria: The Training paradise!

Gran Canaria is a natural wonder. It is the heart of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Spanish is the island’s language of the land and the Euro is the official currency. Volcanic in origin, the island boasts endless sandy beaches and a diverse landscape that alternates between lush valleys and forests to spectacular rock formations and deserts.

Sunshine, high mountains and traffic-free roads
The Training Paradise!

We’ll spend our days outside of our comfort zone and our nights well inside of it.

Our training camp is based at the 4-star Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa on the south coast of the island, in the picturesque town of Puerto de Mogan.

Each day we'll have a fully supported ride with our usual TBT experienced ride leaders and Support Van.

How does it compare to Mallorca?

It doesn't!

Gran Canaria shares the same latitude as Florida whereas Mallorca and New Jersey are on the same latitude... difficult to compare!

But if you really want some sort of comparison, check out these February/March average climate charts:

Gran Canaria
Average Daily Temperature
21C (70F) 11C (52F)
Average LOW Temperature
16C (61F) 7C (45F)

Average Rainfall

Still need a Final Push...

Here’s why you should ratchet up your winter training with a week in Gran Canaria with Thomson Bike Tours this winter:

  • It’s warmer than home and warmer than Mallorca. Much warmer!
  • If you're going to suffer, at least do it in paradise.
  • The view is better than the one from your trainer.
  • If it’s good enough for Spartacus, it’s good enough for you.
  • Because the Valley of the Tears sounds like a great vacation spot to you.

Enjoying the warm sunshine in the Gran Canaria Gran Fondo in December!
